Strategy Development and Implementation

Strategy Development Workshops

Strategy development workshops assist business owners to develop, grow and transition their businesses. The workshops are currently undertaken to drive the development of:

The annual business plan in the context of a longer term horizon (for example three or five years) with the horizon to be determined by the nature of the business.
A business exit strategy.
An acquisition strategy with associated identification of criteria for target organisations.
The identification of organic growth opportunities and funding requirements.
Capital raising preparation and presentations for private equity and debt funding.
Professionalisation or management transition in a family business.

The workshops are tailored to suit the specific organisational needs and the objectives of the business owner but will typically involve a six-step process:

1. Familiarisation
Review of background material provided by the organisation to get an overview of the business and potential issues that the business is facing.

2. Further Understanding
Interviews are conducted with the business owner, senior executives and other key staff to gain further insights which will guide the development of the workshop process.

3. Initial Feedback
The preliminary findings from the interviews are assembled into a brief oral feedback presentation. An overview of this is provided to the business owner prior to the workshop and is specifically used in the preparation of the agenda and associated workshop process.

4. Workshop
The workshop is typically undertaken over one or two days, commencing with the initial feedback presentation. The session then progresses to work through the key issues and opportunities for the business.

Phase One of the workshop is about the business as it currently stands along with the current environment and market context in which the business is operating.

Phase Two of the workshop is about the future and this is dependent upon the objectives and aspirations of the business owner. Phase Two of the workshop may be separated from Phase One for a brief period of time in circumstances where preparation is necessary to maximise the value of Phase Two of the workshop.

5. Outcomes
The workshop outcomes, including all decisions, agreements and key points from each discussion, are all captured and presented to the business owner.

6. Implementation

Business Plan
The development of the business plan may be facilitated by The Continuity Alliance Team whereby a suitable template is agreed and the content is extracted from the outcome of workshop. Additional work is typically required from the organisation to achieve this outcome. It is essential that a suitable employee/organisational resource is made available to work alongside the Continuity Alliance Team.

Rolling 90 Day Plan
The essence of the business plan can be taken to the next level of detail in a rolling 90 Day Plan to drive implementation across the business. This plan captures the activities being undertaken, the measures appropriate to these activities and their impact on the financial outcomes for the business.

Coaching
Building an internal capability to both envision a future and to deliver against organisational goals is a core organisational competence for creating value in a business. Coaching can be provided to support this at an individual and team level.
